Near record heat continues late this afternoon across eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, with heat index values above 105 in much of the area. The persistent heat and worsening drought continue to raise fire weather concerns across the area. The heat and fire weather conditions will improve early in the evening. Widely scattered thunderstorms will remain possible across parts of southeast Oklahoma and western Arkansas through sunset. The strongest storms may produce locally strong to severe wind gusts but widespread severe weather is not expected. SPOTTER AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ACTION STATEMENT

Dangerous heat will persist Wednesday afternoon, with near record high temperatures. Spotty afternoon thunderstorms are possible during the afternoon hours. A slow moving cold front is forecast to arrive late Wednesday evening through Thursday. Widely scattered showers and scattered thunderstorms are likely to spread along and north of the front with the highest rain chances generally along and north of Interstate 40. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected Thursday into Friday with hot weather likely to return by the weekend.
