south central and southeast Colorado.
DAY ONE
Today and Tonight An approaching Pacific storm system will bring periods of moderate to heavy rainfall to the Continental Divide starting by midday today, with areal coverage and intensity of showers and isolated thunderstorms increasing through the afternoon and evening. A Flood Watch is in effect for the eastern San Juan Mountains and the Upper Rio Grande Valley starting this afternoon, and lasting through Friday afternoon, for the potential of moderate to heavy rainfall across already saturated grounds leading to excessive runoff.
DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN
Thursday through Tuesday Heavy rainfall from showers and embedded thunderstorms is in the forecast for Thursday through Friday for the Mountains, with the heaviest rainfall amounts across the San Juan Range. Total rainfall amounts of 3 to 4 inches are possible over the San Juan Range, with up to an inch for the Central Mountains, San Luis Valley and Eastern Mountains. Snow levels will be quite high for most of this storm, typically above 12,000 feet. These levels will fall to 11,000 feet on Friday. The combination of the heavy rain and snow melt at higher elevations may lead to flooding across the San Juan mountains starting early Thursday and lasting into Friday. If you plan to travel over the mountain passes in south central and southwest Colorado during this time period, please use extreme caution.
